What are lung diseases?

Lung diseases are often chronic conditions that affect your lungs, airway, and breathing. When not addressed, they prevent the lungs from working efficiently. At the first sign of shortness of breath or other breathing problems, see Dr. Abukamleh for a lung function evaluation.

What are the different types of lung diseases?

The main types of lung issues include:

Airway diseases

Airway disease affects your airways, which carry oxygen and additional gasses out of and into your lungs. These diseases can narrow or obstruct the airways. You might feel like you’re trying to breathe through a straw because of an airway disease.

Lung circulation diseases

Lung circulation diseases affect the blood vessels in your lungs. They may develop because of scarring, clotting, or blood vessel inflammation. Lung circulation diseases affect your lungs’ ability to take in oxygen and eliminate carbon dioxide.

Lung tissue diseases

Lung tissue diseases affect the structure of the lungs. They may develop because of inflamed or scarred lung tissues, decreasing your ability to breathe deeply and effectively. You might feel like you’re wearing a vest that’s too tight.

What are examples of lung disease?

Common lung diseases include:

  • Asthma
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • Lung cancer
  • Pneumonia
  • Pulmonary edema (fluid buildup in the lungs)
  • Pulmonary embolism (blocked artery in the lungs)
  • Pulmonary hypertension
  • Pulmonary fibrosis
  • Bronchitis
  • Emphysema
  • Cystic fibrosis
  • Tuberculosis

See Dr. Abukamleh at the first sign of a problem to help you breathe easier and avoid complications.

How are lung diseases diagnosed?

Dr. Abukamleh diagnoses lung diseases after discussing your symptoms and medical history, checking your vital signs, and completing a physical exam. He listens to your breathing and completes lung function tests to evaluate breathing efficiency. You might need blood testing, chest X-rays, or other imaging procedures.

How are lung diseases treated?

Treating a lung disease depends on the type you have and its severity. Dr. Abukamleh might suggest making lifestyle changes, taking medications, using an inhaler, or taking advantage of oxygen therapy, home ventilation therapy, or pulmonary rehabilitation. It’s also important to avoid smoking and other lung irritants.

If you need surgery or another medical procedure, Dr. Abukamleh offers referrals. Follow up with him to ensure your treatment is effective.
